Craniosacral Therapy
CranioSacral therapy (CST) is an alternative treatment most often practised by osteopaths, chiropractors, and massage therapists. It employs a ‘soft’ touch to manipulate the joints in the cranium or skull, parts of the pelvis & spine to treat disease or discomfort. CranioSacral therapy was developed by Osteopath John Upledger during the 1970s, as a form of cranial osteopathy. It is a hands-on & non-invasive therapy which aims to enhance the body’s own healing capabilities. According to the Upledger Institute, CST uses a gentle touch of under 5 grams to “release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system.” This soft touch is said to affect the pressure and circulation of cerebrospinal fluid (the fluid around the brain and spinal cord) leading to the relief of pain and dysfunction.

CST can be carried out as a standalone treatment or used in conjunction with other alternative therapies. It can be used to treat a variety of conditions, both physical and psychological. By complementing the body’s natural healing processes, CST can be used as a preventive health measure for its ability to boost resistance to disease. It is effective for a wide range of problems including the following disorders which the Upledger Institute lists as suitable for treatment with CST:

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Autism
  • Back pain
  • Brain injury
  • Central nervous system disorders
  • Chronic fatigue
